The Eucalypt Dilemma: Can we Use Eucalypts to Address Wood Deficit and Poverty in Tanzania - Review

Abstract:

Eucalyptus species are among the most widely planted tree species globally due to their fast growth, adaptability to diverse ecological conditions, and wide range of industrial and household applications. In Tanzania, Eucalyptus plantations play an important role in afforestation, farm forestry, and smallholder wood production systems aimed at addressing increasing wood demand and improving livelihoods of rural communities. Despite these benefits, Eucalyptus species remain controversial due to concerns regarding high water consumption, groundwater depletion, allelopathic effects, reduction in biodiversity, and possible soil nutrient depletion. This paper reviews the ecological, hydrological, and socio-economic implications of Eucalyptus planting, with particular emphasis on the Tanzanian context. Evidence from Tanzania and other countries indicates that although Eucalyptus species may consume substantial amounts of water due to their rapid growth, they are also relatively efficient in biomass production per unit of water used when compared with several other native tree species and agricultural crops. Furthermore, Eucalyptus plantations contribute significantly to wood supply, energy production, income generation, and rehabilitation of degraded lands. The paper argues that, when properly managed and planted in suitable sites, Eucalyptus species can contribute substantially to reducing wood deficits and improving livelihoods in Tanzania while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. There is a need to develop appropriate site-specific management guidelines for sustainable Eucalyptus plantation development.
