Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing of Bacterial isolates from Cases of Pneumonia in Beed District, Maharashtra, India

Abstract:

Pneumonia remains a significant public health concern in India, particularly among immunocompromised and elderly populations in rural regions with limited access to diagnostic and healthcare facilities. This study was conducted in the Beed district of Maharashtra to investigate the bacterial pathogens associated with clinically diagnosed pneumonia cases and to evaluate their antibiotic susceptibility profiles. Respiratory samples, including sputum and nasal swabs, were collected from patients attending both government and private hospitals. Bacterial identification was performed using standard microbiological methods and the VITEK® 2 Compact system. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was carried out using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method in accordance with CLSI guidelines. The most frequently isolated organisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus,  Significantly, a high level of resistance was observed against commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and third-generation cephalosporins. In contrast, better sensitivity was recorded with carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, linezolid, and vancomycin. These findings highlight the urgent need for regular monitoring of antibiotic resistance and careful use of antibiotics to improve pneumonia treatment, especially in areas with limited resources.
