This study analyses the determinants of the economic profitability of family farms in the central regions of Chad. By combining a quantitative survey of 300 farms and in-depth qualitative investigations, the research identifies access to adapted agricultural credit as the most significant positive factor, ahead of purely technical aspects. Membership in active farmers' organization and diversification towards crop-livestock systems also represent key factors for economic performance. The qualitative analysis reveals a typology of four adaptation strategies and highlights that the constraints perceived as priorities by farmers are more institutional and financial than technical. These results argue for a fundamental reorientation of agricultural policies towards creating a favorable economic and institutional environment, notably by improving farmers' financial inclusion, professionalizing farmers' organizations and investing in public goods that reduce transaction costs.
