Abstract:

This study assessed for Milk Traits characteristics among different cattle and buffalo breeds reared under smallholder conditions in Ajmer district, Rajasthan, India. Monthly data were collected from animals maintained by participating households, with milk recording conducted & milk samples were analyzed for density, fat, lactose, protein, and solids non-fat (SNF) content using standardized equipment. A total of 1790 milk samples were analyzed, representing Holstein Friesian (HF) crossbred, Jersey (JR) crossbred, indigenous cattle, non-descript cattle, indigenous buffalo, and non-descript buffalo. Statistical analysis using ANOVA and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) revealed significant (p < 0.001) differences among breed for all milk components. Buffaloes exhibited higher Fat (5.82–5.36%) and Protein % (3.28–3.11%) contents than cattle (Fat: 4.56–4.36%; Protein: 3.13–3.02%). These results highlight that buffalo milk is richer in solids, emphasizing its economic value in fat-based milk pricing systems.
