Morphological Characterization and Study on Chemical Composition of Four Guinea Sweet Potato Cultivars

Abstract:

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is an essential staple crop and globally, valued for its high nutritional potential and adaptability. Addressing these gaps is crucial for supporting food security, enhancing value?added processing, and guiding varietal selection strategies in Guinea. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphological and chemical composition of four local sweet potato cultivars (Toloba, Thiani, Tolooulen, and Gbenko). Plant materials were collected, freeze-dried, milled into flour, and analyzed for moisture, dry matter, proteins, lipids, minerals, and carbohydrates following AOAC methods. Data were processed using ANOVA, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA). Results showed significant biochemical variation among cultivars. Thiani exhibited the highest dry matter, protein, and lipid contents, making it suitable for processing and long-term storage. Tolooulen and Gbenko were rich in carbohydrates but lower in proteins, while Toloba displayed high moisture content and lower nutritional density. PCA and HCA confirmed the distinct clustering of cultivars, driven mainly by moisture, dry matter, and protein levels. In conclusion, the study highlights substantial biochemical diversity governed by genotypic differences. These findings provide a scientific basis for varietal selection, improved post-harvest management, and enhanced utilization of sweet potato in Guinea.
