Abstract:

The activity aims to demonstrate and evaluate sesame technology in selected districts of Diga and Chewaqa, of Western Oromia. Accordingly; Hagalo and Yale varieties were planted along with a standard check Walin on adjacent plots of 10m*10m each, adhering to all agronomic recommendations. At maturity, participatory variety evaluation was done using important traits set by the farmers to select the best variety, selected Yale first. Among the other traits listed; yield, disease tolerance, number of branches per plant, number of capsules per branch, capsule size and seed color were the first five most important traits considered and ranked accordingly by the farmers. Mean yield of 8.75 qt/ha, 8.3 qt/ha and 7.3 qt/ha, respectively, were for Yale; Hagalo and Walin varieties (p?0.05); Yale variety ensured 19.17 % yield advantage over Walin. Further; net gain and cost-benefit ratio of 75, 525 ETB per ha and 4.20; 71,225ETB and 4.00 and 60,475 ETB per ha and 3.36; respectively; were for Yale, Hagalo and Walin varieties; more profitability of Yale variety Hence; Yale variety has met the farmers’ need it is vital recommending to scale up the variety with full packages to the farmers in the study area and other areas with similar agro-ecologies in the future.
