Abstract:

In major African cities, such as those in Ivory Coast, several factors hinder effective household waste management. Populations settle without access to urban services, as seen in many neighborhoods like Ayakro in the Yopougon Commune1. This study aims to analyze the determinants of urban unsanitary conditions in Ayakro and the solutions proposed by households. Data was collected from 200 households using questionnaires. The results reveal the absence of waste disposal sites, reduced waste collection frequency, lack of collection trucks, road deterioration, and incivility. These factors contribute to the unsanitary conditions in the Ayakro neighborhood. Aware of this situation, households recommend raising awareness, providing collection trucks, improving road conditions, increasing the number of waste bins, and ensuring regular waste collection. Implementing urban sanitation standards along with these proposed solutions would promote a healthy environment in Ayakro.
