Abstract:

The study was conducted in Kombolcha ELFORA Industrial Abattoir to assess the current status, public health and economic importance of bovine hydatidosis. A total of 400 cattle randomly sampled and examined after slaughter for the presence of hydatid cysts in the organs and viscera of the animals using the standard meat inspection procedures hydatid cyst count, characterization and economic loss assessment were conducted. Out of a total of 400 cattle’s slaughtered in Kombolcha ELFORA Industrial Abattoir, 93 (17.4%) animals were found harboring hydatid cysts. samples were taken to the parasitology laboratory at the Kombolcha regional laboratory and cyst identification, fertility and viability tests were performed. The statistical analysis showed that there was no difference (P > 0.05) between the prevalence of bovine hydatidosis and sex of animals, P > 0.05. The prevalence of hydatidosis was also found to be significant with origin of the study animals (P < 0.05). Of 319 cysts examined, 81(25.4%) calcified, 188(58.9%) sterile, and 50(15.67%) fertile cysts. From the total fertile cysts, 31(9.72%) were found to be viable. Of 145 cysts recorded in the lung, 20(13.79%) calcified 95(65.52%) sterile, 18(12.4%) viable and 12(8.28%) were non viable fertile cysts. Furthermore, of 160 cysts recorded in the liver, 53(33.13%) were calcified and 13(8.13%) were viable. The rate of cyst calcification was higher in the liver than in the lung while fertility rate was higher among the cysts of the lung. The financial losses from organ condemnation during the study time were estimated to be 3710 ETB. Thus, echincoccosis/hydatidosis is considerably a prevalent disease in cattle, with serious public health concern reflections and causes substantial visible and invisible losses in cattle in the study area. Therefore, initiation and implementation of control measures is necessary in order to alleviate its economic impact as well as zoonotic risks to the human.
