Flooding is a recurring challenge in Ethiopia, particularly in Fogera Woreda, where the main rainy season (June–September) exacerbates socio-economic and health vulnerabilities. This study assesses the determinants of farmers’ adaptation to flood hazards, the socio-economic impacts of flooding, and the barriers to effective adaptation strategies. Using logistic regression analysis, key factors influencing flood adaptation were identified, including household head’s gender, marital status, family size, livelihood diversification, previous flood experience, and access to credit, all of which positively impacted adaptation decisions. Conversely, age, educational level, access to irrigation, farm size, and extension services negatively influenced adaptation strategies. Farmers primarily adapted by using flood-tolerant crops, shifting to higher ground, and diversifying livelihoods. However, major barriers such as lack of financial resources, information, labor, and government support hindered effective adaptation. The findings highlight the urgent need for improved information dissemination, financial support, effective extension services, and community-based flood management systems. These measures can significantly enhance the adaptive capacity of vulnerable households and build resilience to flooding in the region.
